Fitting outside a window recess
1) Measure the width of the window frame or recess in centimetres at the top, middle and bottom and make a note of the largest measurement. You may wish to completely cover the frame or not. If there is no frame it would be usual to go approx 5cm past each side ( ie 10cm added to width) You now know the width of your blind.
2) Measure the drop of the window frame or recess in centimetres of the window on the left, the right and in the middle. Again taking note of the largest measurement. If you are fitting to the window frame this will be your drop if fitting to a recess with no frame it would be usual to add 5cm at the top and bottom ( ie 10cm added to drop) You now know the drop of your blind.
3) Whoever is fitting the blind should take the measurements - taking into account what they will be fitting the brackets to and checking for anything sticking out (window handles, picture rails, sockets, tiling etc ).
If fitting your blind outside a window recess, the ends of the headrail will be visible and you would usually order a pelmet with wooden returns.
Fitting inside a window recess
1) Measure the width of the recess in centimetres at the top, middle and bottom and make a note of the smallest measurement. Now deduct 1cm to allow your blind to raise and lower cleanly. You now know the width of your blind.
2) Measure the drop of the recess in centimetres on the left, the right and in the middle of the area. Again taking note of the smallest measurement. You now know the drop of your blind.
3) Whoever is fitting the blind should take the measurements - taking into account what they will be fitting the brackets to and checking for anything sticking out (window handles, picture rails, sockets, tiling etc ).
If you are fitting inside a recess you need to make sure that you can raise and lower the blind cleanly. This means deduct a minimum of 1cm, although if you have wide frames you can deduct more. So long as they cover the glass area, blinds do not have to fill the recess, often they can look better with a gap on each side.
If fitting your blind inside a window recess the ends of the blind will probably be hidden up against the wall and there won’t be room for returns. You probably need a flat pelmet.
Fitting to a corner or bay window
If you are fitting blinds to a corner or bay window or other angled windows where blinds will be adjacent to each other, you must allow space for blinds to be fitted. The best way to do this is to cut two strips approx 30cm long by 6cm wide these will allow you to calculate how big your blinds can be and not impede each other.
If you order your pelmets as uncut they will be overlong with one flat end and one end mitred for its wooden return. This allows you to customise the pelmet on site for a fine professional finish.
